About St. Joseph

The Life of St. Joseph

Though the Gospels record no words spoken by St. Joseph, his actions speak volumes. A descendant of King David, Joseph was a righteous man living in Nazareth when he was betrothed to Mary. When he discovered she was with child, his initial plan to divorce her quietly was interrupted by an angel who revealed God's plan for salvation.

From that moment, Joseph's life was one of complete trust and obedience. He protected Mary and the infant Jesus, fleeing to Egypt to escape Herod's massacre. He raised Jesus as his own son, teaching him the carpenter's trade and the Jewish faith. Though we do not know the circumstances of his death, tradition holds that he died in the presence of Jesus and Mary—the holiest death imaginable.
